The first graders in Cedar Bluffs have been learning about the
Lewis and Clark Expedition. We started by reading Seaman's
Journal On the Trail with Lewis and Clark , a picture book, by
Patricia Reeder Eubank. Based on the true entries in Lewis' own
journal describing his dog Seaman, the book brought us the creative
possibilities of a dog's point of view. As we read, the kids
took turns holding Seaman, the stuffed animal. We had fun
doing a map reading activity. We compared an original map,
our classroom map, and a map in the back of the picture book. This
was an opportune time for me to share my Indian collection
and a series of oil paintings created by my father-in-law, Robert
Hegy. The series of 10 paintings retell the story of the Lewis and
Clark Expedition. The children enjoyed the paintings so much we
have asked Mr. Hegy to visit our classroom and show us the new
paintings he has added to the collection.
