A Bit About Our Project
Our project centered on sharing the knowledge and values of the
Ho-Chunk, or Winnebago, culture and to see that culture shared with
others.
How Our Project "Evolved!"
We initially contacted Viola LaPointe, a Native American woman
who lives on the Winnebago Indian Reservation. We first had
in mind a gathering of friends and family to share stories of our
individual ancestory and culture. Bust as we spoke to Viola,
our initial plan was changed to meeting with her daughter Sarah, in
a church group gathering.
Sarah shared basic aspects of her culture and how her people's
separate clans interlaced and worked together, with each clans'
specific tasks, to form a cohesive unit. In addition, we
furnished some food, as well as interacted with the group and
shared our culture similarities as well as our differences.
From there, we were able to get ideas from Sarah about how to
teach cultural differences, which we will use in our own individual
classroom settings.
The following pictures are those we took at the final gathering
of Sarah and her students from Winnebago and the surrounding areas.
We'd like to thank Sarah and Viola for their cooperation and
support for us throughout this project. Without their
knowledge and eagerness to share their culture, this project would
not have been possible.
