Westward Waters Auction...Going Once...
Westward Waters met for an all day workshop on Friday, February
4th, at the Educational Service Unit # 2 in Fremont. Diane
Wolfe welcomed the group as well as discussed the day's itinerary
and goals. Dr. Don Hickey presented the group with a style
sheet for history book reviews along with some explanation.
Next, Dr. Hickey led the group discussion focusing on the
classic Oregon Trail journals. Previously, during our last
meeting at DeSoto Bend, there were six classic journals assigned
and distributed evenly for the group to read. January 15th -
February 1st, the group was asked to make a post on the blog site
in reference to their assigned journal. They were to comment
on what makes this particular journal a classic along with
describing areas of interest. Friday's discussion included
questions such as: what do these accounts have in common, in what
ways is each account unique, what do they tell us about life on the
Oregon Trail, and what is their view of the people they encounter
on the trail?
During the book discussion, "discussion dollars" or
"Westward Waters dollars" were awarded to group members
for their participation, comments, and questions. At the end
of the workshop, the group was able to bid on items such as copies
of a Lewis and Clark board game, extra game cartridges for their
jeopardy game, extra bags from a Smithsonian event which included
some great resources, and other useful software and resources left
over from the previous two years - using their "discussion
dollars". The group had a great time with this and the
level of enthusiasm was high.
After realizing it was a bit chilly in the conference room,
Diane and Angela passed out the new blue Westward Waters jackets.
Other items distributed to the entire group were the
children's accounts that will be read and discussed on the blog
beginning February 15th.
Dr. Hickey also gave the group a preview of freighting on the
trail and some insight on what they will see and talk more about in
April. Diane concluded the workshop with April 1st - 3rd's
workshop itinerary (which is also posted to this sight) and a
tentative schedule for this upcoming summer travel workshop.
